New Communities 1960-2000

This page is to be filled hopefully by friends and website visitors with any knowledge you have of where you live/d in our villages; about your house or street and perhaps of the people who may have lived there in the past. Tell us about when you first arrived and your thoughts on your new home and village.

Please get in touch with your stories and photos and we will add them to the site.

Second Phase of new blood ~ 1960s

The second phase of new houses being built really changed the village, as it doubled the population of both Southmoor and Kingston Bagpuize. Estates were built and new occupiers and villagers moved into the houses little thinking of how their home had changed the face of the village. Where fields had been, there was now in Kingston, new streets named Rimes Close, Frax Close, Bellamy Close and Norwood Ave., whilst in Southmoor was now a large estate on land west of Draycott Moor Road. Cherry Tree Close was being built on a Cherry orchard. There also appeared new bungalows along the Faringdon Road.  Changes now appeared in many places such as Rimes Lane. Barns there were changed into homes and again new occupants moved in.

A new school was promised as we enrolled our children in what was to our eyes, the Victorian & out dated John Blandy School on the Faringdon Road. The new village primary school moved into the new John Blandy School on the Draycott Estate in 1968 and 3 acres of original orchard land was bought as a recreational area beyond the school playground. Following the boundary changes in 1974 North Berkshire Rural District became the Vale of the White Horse District, in the County of Oxfordshire. We changed county overnight!
